The Dangerous Bible

For me personally, the Bible is the sacred document of my community of faith. It holds a place that no other book or writing can while that does not denigrate other non-canonical books. That the Bible has errors, there can be no question, That the Bible is not a science book, is beyond debate. But as a communication of man’s development in his (no gender intended) understanding of God, there is no equal. And ultimately God becomes most defined by the person of Jesus who became the Christ. So, what’s the danger here?

An individual can use the Bible, and more specifically a single verse or passage, to prove anything you want to believe.

The last 2,000 years of history though proves the Bible’s danger, especially in the hands of immature, ambitious, and evil people. The Bible has been used to make legitimate acts of wars and killings galore. The Bible has been used by the church to punish and exclude hundreds of millions of people. The very things that Jesus opposed and taught against are the things that the church has supported- in the name of God of course.

We simply will not take the blame but opt instead for seeing everyone else as the problem(s). We need to remember the story from 2 Samuel 12 as Nathan said to David, “YOU are the one”. I am the problem.

Various segments of the church today use the Bible to ostracize social groups, heap condemnation on others, and label as heretical all those who do not agree with their views of religion and God. Church membership is used to EXCLUDE all manners of individuals while Jesus kept INCLUDING everyone. We see this so clearly in the wedding parable of Matt. 22 and Luke 14. Life is about a relationship with God, not about adhering to certain doctrines!

Jesus used the parables to subvert business as usual much like the Zen koans and Confucian riddles, but we’ll have nothing of it. We want what we want so the Biblical text is not used for transformation of mankind, but to fosters religious beliefs. Worst of all, those who refuse to accept what this group or that group BELIEVES have too often been killed.

And it’s always the BIBLE that’s used as a proof text for the mayhem that’s committed “in the name of God”. We call God the Father, but we act like we’ve forgotten who our daddy really is!

Where’s the “follow me” principle that Jesus advocated, the love your neighbors- and enemies?

Intentional Binding of the Bible

Students of literary criticism and the Source Document Hypothesis wrangle over the harsh transitions, repetition and other shortcomings in the Biblical text. Perhaps the writers, editors and redactors of the Bible actually made fewer errors than scholars suspect. Many hold the position that the complete and complex version of the Bible came to form by blending and melding of local oral and written tradition.

Initially my personal religious convictions compelled me to ignore the mistakes and look for a central spiritual message. After years of in depth academic study of the text I cant help but to recognize and confront the text. At present, I, among others, have forgiven the textual errors and oversights and have credited Biblical writers with ingenuity, creativity and a great deal of forethought in their efforts to preserve the continuity and integrity of the work as a whole.

Yet, today I consider for the first time that the writers and later editors were not so sloppy and haphazard in their craft. Maybe, the original intention was in fact, to bind the greater story in an anthology of sorts while protecting and even promoting the diversity of the oral and written traditions presented within the text. This might account for the two creation stories, and conflicting and repeating stories of Abraham, Noah, Moses, David and the like. It may also explain various names for God and even references to people and places lost to history, however most likely well known to the original intended audience. Is it possible that the end result of the Bible as we know it comes to us as an open and outward sign of unity in difference?

Debt and the Bible (part 1)

The United States is arguably a huge Christian nation. In the court rooms as well as government houses, participants still swear to the Bible before commencing.

This is not an article about whether or not the government is, consciousl committing a sin, by letting the credit card industry enslave its citizen with its policies; this is just a simple article exploring what the Judeo/Christian sacred texts have to say about debt.

What does the Bible say about debt?

It is, perhaps, a question that only Bible scholars can answer. The bible is a very controversial book. It took, not just years, but centuries/generations to be compiled. And when one says Bible, which bible or version is being referred to?

The Catholic Bible has more books in it than the Protestant Bible.

Anyway, this passage is regarding the lender, more than the debt itself, or the borrower:

Do not take a pair of millstones, not even the upper one, as a security for a debt, because that would be taking a person’s livelihood as security.

(Deuteronomy 24:6)

In a contemporary world view, this could mean that the lender should not take away the source of the borrower’s livelihood just so the debt could be repaid. We see a lot of this happening in today’s business dealings and government laws in place cannot protect the consumers.

A lot of homes are being foreclosed because they were used as collateral, wages are garnished, and so on.

The Bible was written in a different political and economic standpoint; it is from a different era, and it’s also for a specific group of people.

So it’s safe to say that some of what the Bible says about debt may not be applicable today.

The Plus Points of Bible Software

Bible software is a modern way of reading this holy book through the computer or any other device. It has some advantages compared to the ordinary book.

The Bible is the life story of Jesus and the diary of the Apostles. Everything, along with every question and answer are most likely written down here. The handheld manuscript Bible was and is the reference of our life’s own stories. The obstacles and challenges one encounters will be a glimpse of what others has experienced in their lives.

It is a compilation of a vast collection of volumes in black and white. Many generations have referred to the Book for guidance. Groups of spiritual mission have used the writings in drafting their preaching. There are different interpretations, different symbolisms, but still used for unifying different sectors. The reference of the passages by pastors and priests and giving in layman’s terms effectively relay the word of God to the listeners.

Some groups of media are speculating and analyzing the contents of the Book. Some take the words literally and therefore arrive at a different understanding. Some have the ability to distinguish its hypothetical conveyance.

The Bible is the basis for all the morals and values administered on rules and regulations of government mandating. The core of human rights is also justified by the Bible. It makes a profound explanation of how a person should be taken care of and how to manage one’s life.

With the advancement of technology, this generation has been left with limited time to read the Bible and reflect on the words. It has narrowed down the association of one’s self to the spiritual implications of the passages. A degree of innocence has marked with the young ones’ knowledge of the scriptures.

Today’s generation is glued to the television and video games. There is hardly time for them to read the bible. The sway of media has greatly changed the pattern of living. The community has based most of their life decisions on roles portrayed in films and fictional shows.

An effective material for building bonds is a strategy. Interacting and reflecting on the same subjects is the key to family relations. Families worldwide incorporate bonds with family members using the learning reflected from the Bible. Each one has a different application and understanding, and each has to share.

The Bible software is a new technology. The contents of the book could be read in a computer or other electronic device. It still encompasses all the contents from old testaments to the new testaments. The difference is that you are not holding an actual reading material. Instead, the texts are “printed” on the screen of the device you are using.

The Bible software can be a material to hold group sessions from small gatherings to large community movers and discuss interactive activities as well as the children with minimal exposure. With the use of this creative method, children can anticipate the colorful and informal format the Bible Software has in store. With group sessions for mature audience, the software delivers passages in reasonable applied stories.

It enables to bridge the gap between the pure knowledge to the differently adapting community based on statistics. All positions in this life are comparable to any of the stories written and now can be viewed and listened to the Bible Software. It is the living evidence of the secrets of life that needs to be consistently reminded as a token from God.
